The 2010 Nebraska Red Angus Tour on August 14 was a great success, as cattlemen and cattlewomen from four states gathered for great hospitality and fellowship. The day began with a tour of Darr Feedlot South, where Craig Uden, Harry Hart and John Schroeder answered questions and visited with the group about topics of specific interest to the cattle feeding phase of the industry. This top-notch feedlot showcased a dedication to customer service, easy cattle-handling and sorting strategies and informed marketing practices. The Darr stop also included judging classes of heifer calves and yearling heifers provided by Hueftle Cattle Company.
The next stop was Eustis, Neb. for a brisket sandwich lunch, then on south for a pasture tour of Hueftle pairs. The group loaded onto a hay rack, along with several other vehicles and drove through the hills to a corral where the cows and calves were waiting. It was an impressive display from the herd that has produced such breed-impact bulls as Conquest and Jackhammer. Neil and Anita Hueftle and Kim Lehmann along with the rest of the Hueftle family were on hand to visit about their program built on growthy, high performance, good carcass cattle.
After leaving Eustis, the group traveled east of Elwood, Neb. to view a display of Cross Diamond Cattle Company yearling bulls and replacement heifers. The yearlings were a strong testament to Scott and Kim Ford's program based on efficiency, longevity and sustainable growth. After enjoying root beer floats, the group traveled south of Bertrand, Neb. to the last stop at the Cross Diamond Cattle Company headquarters. Attendees were treated to refreshments and a display of cow/calf pairs.
The junior Nebraska Red Angus members concluded a "road rally" that had taken place along the entire tour. Water games were enjoyed, and awards were announced for contests that had taken place over the course of the day, including a weight guessing contest on herd bull, Medallion N328. The day concluded with a ribeye steak sandwich supper, then a junior benefit auction.
