Nebraska Junior Red Angus

In February of 2009, at the Cattlemen's Classic in Kearney, the Nebraska Red Angus Association appointed several people to get the junior organization back to an active status.   Newly appointed advisors were Matt & Dawn Caldwell, Mike Hein, and Matt Beals.

The Nebraska Juniors' first official event was joining the adults on the Nebraska Red Angus Field Day in South Central Nebraska.   There were special activities for the junior at two of the stops.   During the lunch stop at Beals Genetics (Matt Beals Family) we did a cap/advertising item swap.   Several of the operations that were represented that day donated a cap, gloves, or calculators. All of the items were thrown into a feed pan and each junior was allowed to reach up high to draw something out.   Now every junior has a new cap or some other item to do advertising for their friends in the Red Angus business.

At our supper stop, which was at S Diamond, the juniors had an equipment i.d. contest.   Many of the items were antique and rather challenging!   The junior getting the highest score received a $25 gift card to Cabela's. Everyone who participated got gift cards to Dairy Queen.   To continue the "ice cream" theme, the juniors made and ate a giant banana split.   We set out an 8' piece of rain gutter, clean of course, and filled it with bananas, ice cream, and all the toppings.   The juniors had a great time eating right out of the gutter!   Last, but not least, everyone received a t-shirt.   Everyone had a great time with the activities and meeting new friends of all ages.

A number of Red Angus juniors participated in the Nebraska Junior Beef Expo in Norfolk the first weekend of June.   Red Angus participants did very well in the satellite contests, placing 1 st , 2 nd , or 3 rd in many of them.   Contestants included Mary, Margaret, and Edward Spencer, along with Kaydee and Emmet Caldwell.   In addition, Red Angus won the new herdsmanship contest.   That resulted in a $100 prize which was used for a pizza party for the Red Angus juniors at State Fair.

Other events juniors have participated in this past year include the Round Up and North American Junior Red Angus event, which was held at SDSU in Brookings, SD.   Sidney Hein made the bus trip with 30+ young people from around the country to visit ranches and businesses in South Dakota on the Round Up.   Sidney, along with Kaydee and Emmet Caldwell participated in the NAJRA & represented Nebraska well!   They placed in every satellite contest, winning first place in many of them.   In addition, Emmet & Kaydee got grand & reserve showmen in their age group and exhibited the best over-all pair of heifers.   Sidney also placed in showmanship and had a good day with her animals.
